Advice

The Devon Climate Emergency project is raising awareness and encouraging everyone to act.

What can I do?

Everyone can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, to the electricity we use and the food we eat, we can make a difference. Start with these actions to help tackle the climate crisis.

Things you can do straight away, that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions:

  • Consume less – don’t always take the extra to gain the discount
  • Buy stuff that will last – avoid built-in obsolescence whenever possible
  • Rethink: reuse, recycle, repurpose, repair, share
  • Buy locally, ideally stuff that’s made or grown locally
  • Eat seasonally, grow your own food if you can
  • Eat less red meat, avoid imported meat
  • Use lower wattage cooking when you can (microwave, induction hob, air fryer)
  • Make sure that your light bulbs are low energy type
  • Travel less by car and aircraft
  • Whenever the choice is there, use public transport, cycle or walk
  • Choose an electricity/gas supplier who offers 100% renewable energy tariffs
  • Think about how you heat your home – don’t heat unnecessarily – think about heat loss
  • Move investments to organisations that prioritise sustainable and ethical business models

Things you can do when the opportunity or need arises, that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions:

Improve your home energy efficiency – seek professional advice on:

  • loft insulation and any appropriate improvements
  • external wall thermal standards and any appropriate insulation improvements
  • installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and battery storage of surplus electricity they have generated; if appropriate include a diverter for your domestic hot water
  • improving your heating controls and when the time is right changing the home heating source to a ground or air source heat pump

Change your mode of transport:

  • when the time is right, change to a battery electric vehicle
  • if you enjoy cycling, extend the opportunities with an electric bike
  • familiarize yourself with public transport timetables and make use of its availability whenever possible
  • walk or cycle locally, instead of using the car
  • plan your holidays or business trips to minimise, or preferably eliminate, air travel

National Resources

MCS – the national certification scheme which sets, defines & maintains the Standards for low-carbon energy technology products, contractors and their installations. This includes heat pumps, solar, small wind & battery storage.

ZAP-MAP – search for EV charging points, plan journeys and pay for charging
